About this venue

The Common Room is a unique heritage and cultural venue located in Neville Hall in central Newcastle upon Tyne. Originally opened in 1872 as the home of The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, the Grade II* listed building underwent major conservation work and reopened in 2021. Today, operated by a charity, it preserves and celebrates the North East's engineering history while hosting a vibrant range of events including live gigs, comedy, lectures, exhibitions, private hires, and weddings. Inside, the venue features historic spaces such as the Victorian Wood Hall library with stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings, an Edwardian tiered Lecture Theatre, and the 5|Quarter café-bar. It provides a distinctive atmosphere combining historic character with modern event facilities.
