Newcastle scene report: Tokyo closes, Freight Island and Pilgrim Street rise
A Westgate Road favourite shut its doors after twenty years, while the old Debenhams and the Pilgrim Quarter became the city's new nights out. Here is how Newcastle and the North East scene is moving.
By StageOS Editorial ·
Newcastle's nightlife map changed a lot in 2026. Some of it is the same story every UK city is living through, with long-running venues closing or changing hands. But the city also gained new rooms, and the centre of gravity is moving.
First up: Func Events, newly on StageOS
North East promoter Func Events, run by DJ Frankie Aziz, has just claimed its page on StageOS, so its nights come first. On Saturday 31 October it's Disgraceland Halloween in Middlesbrough, with Declan Finlay, Str8groovz and Frankie Aziz. On Friday 13 November, Func Presents goes to Ted and Gingers in Stockton, with Frankie Aziz, Harry Long and Jackson Palmer.

Closing: Tokyo, Westgate Road
Tokyo held its final night on Saturday 17 October, after more than twenty years on Westgate Road. The multi-floor late-licence bar was a home for DJ nights, and its terrace was one of the city's summer spots. The building was sold for £1.1m to the Hymus Group, which owns The Dubliner on the Quayside. Its new owners have not yet said what it will become.
For local DJs, losing a room like Tokyo means fewer midweek and warm-up slots in the city centre. Those were the slots where a lot of Newcastle DJs played their first gigs.
Opening: Freight Island and the old Debenhams
The biggest new arrival is Freight Island, which opened in June in the former Debenhams building with a programme of music and live events. WYLD followed inside it in September, with music, live performance and fire acts. On Hood Street, Jungli opened in September on the old Castros site, with live DJ sets.
Growing: Pilgrim Street
At 54 Pilgrim Street, Pilgrim has become one of the busiest small rooms in the city since it opened in 2025. Its free Saturday-afternoon Almost Heaven parties, regular Shakedown and Soulidarity nights, and a free Monday new music showcase put it in the middle of the Pilgrim Quarter's growth. Its November dates include Disco Down with Michael Gray and Renaissance with New York's John Morales.
How the scene is evolving
Three trends stand out. Daytime and afternoon clubbing keeps growing. Big multi-use spaces are replacing traditional clubs. And smaller independent rooms are carrying the grassroots nights. For DJs coming up, that means more pitching to venues that book a mix of live acts and DJs, and more value in a profile that shows what you play in one link.
Where Newcastle DJs come in
The Newcastle DJs group on StageOS runs its first live heat on Wednesday 18 November: eight twenty-minute slots, cameras on the decks, sync off. Book a slot on the heat page. You can see who is playing where on Newcastle What's On and in the Newcastle scene guide.
